COLUMBUS, GA (March 3, 2010) – This Saturday March 6th at 7:30 pm, the 2nd Annual Georgia vs. Alabama High School Indoor Classic will mark the last time many local high school seniors get the chance to showcase their talents to local Chattahoochee area.
Ranging from Westside Macon, GA to Lanett, AL, the competing seniors on Saturday have bleed and sweat high school football for the past four years and now for their last high school game they will venture off into the indoor world. Sure there are no members who ranked in the top recruiting lists on Rivals.com or ESPN Top 150, but for guys like Jamal Bruce (Callaway), who has signed his letter of intent to play his collegiate ball at Duke University, this game is simply the next stepping stone to continuing his education.

On Saturday, Georgia’s Ben Miller (Dooly County) and Alabama’s Von Gibson (Beauregard) will be concentrating on hitting each other on the field, but this fall the two are set to begin hitting the books as teammates at Tuskegee University. Majority of these high school seniors won’t be staring on Saturday’s or even Sundays, but these players exuberate the amateur spirit that makes high school sports so exciting in this area.
Leading the Alabama squad this season is Head Coach Smitty Grider from Beauregard High School who led the Hornets to a 7-4 record and a state high school playoff berth. Tuskegee commit Patrick Moore (Loachapoka), will look to help team Alabama rebound after losing last season’s inaugural classic 54-21.
After a pair of his football players landed both the Offensive and Defensive MVP’s at the inaugural classic, Chattahoochee County High School Head Coach Josh Kemp seemed like the right fit to lead this seasons Georgia squad. Kemp has brought along five members of the Panthers football team as Chattahoochee County and Hardaway High School will be bringing the most members for the Georgia squad with five and four members respectively. Led by Louisville commit Marcus Smith (Hardaway) at quarterback, the Georgia side will be trying to make it two in a row against their neighbors from the west.
“In the beginning, indoor football rarely signed football players from Division I programs,” says Columbus Lions Head Coach Jason Gibson. “This game gives some of these future Division II athletes an early chance to experiment in the indoor game and maybe showcase their talents for the last time.”
In conjunction with Davis Broadcasting, Columbus Regional Hospital, and Xenith Helmets, the Columbus Lions will be hosting the 2nd Annual Georgia vs. Alabama High School Indoor Classic on Saturday March 6th. Doors will be open to the public at 6:30 pm with a 7:30 pm kickoff time.
