COLUMBUS, GA (March 6, 2010) – In the 2nd Annual Georgia vs. Alabama High School Indoor Classic, team Georgia overcame a nine point deficit at halftime to defeat their rivals from the west 83-48 on Saturday night.
In a game that saw 14 combined turnovers, the Georgia seniors collected eight interceptions alone, including two from Dooly County High School’s Ben Miller who went on to earn Defensive MVP honors for the game. Throughout much of the first half, team Alabama seemed to move the ball offensively at will as quarterback Ladarius Willis threw for three first half touchdowns while hooking up on two occasions with Loachapoka High School’s Quindravius Richardson who later earned for his efforts.
After coming out down by nine at halftime, team Georgia capitalized immediately out of the gate returning three turnovers for touchdowns and quickly took a 35-26 lead midway through the third quarter. Georgia would go on to score 34 points in the third quarter taking a 17 point lead into the final quarter.
Alabama could never seem to recover in the fourth as Georgia returned two more interceptions for touchdowns including one by Miller County’s Cosby Salter and Chattahoochee County’s Tyquan Bazemore. Despite the numerous turnovers, Alabama quarterback Ladarius Willis compiled 274 yards with six touchdowns.
In all, team Georgia defensively returned six turnovers for scores while scoring 68 second half points proving to be too much for Alabama to overcome. Bringing home the trophy for the state of Georgia will be Chattahoochee County High School Head Coach Josh Kemp.
“For learning the game in one week of practice, these kids exhibited what indoor football is all about, it’s fast paced, in your face, non- stop action from start to finish,” says Columbus Lions General Manager Jeff Gonos. “Our organization would like to commend all coaches and players for giving the fans a truly entertaining experience.”
