COLUMBUS, GA (January 30, 2012) – Looking to rebuild a defense that gave up a combined 135 points in two playoff games, the Columbus Lions of the Professional Indoor Football League signed two-time indoor champion in defensive back David Smith.

Back in 2009, David Smith (6’2 220 North Carolina State) was a member of the 2009 Reading Express (AIFA) championship club that upended the division champion Columbus Lions while securing Reading’s first championship.  Smith re-joined the Express in 2010, but ultimately ended the season with the Baltimore Mariners (2010).  In two games, Smith grabbed two interceptions helping cap off an undefeated championship season for the Mariners.David Smith

Primarily spending majority of his career in Reading, David ultimately returned the Express for the 2011 season where he finished third in tackles (42) and in interceptions (4) helping the Express get back to the playoffs after a one-year hiatus.

“With training camp around the corner, it is always a plus to have some added veteran experience,” says Columbus Lions Head Coach Jason Gibson.  “It’s hard to argue against a player who has been a part of two championship squads in just short period of time.”

The Columbus Lions are one of six teams in the newly former Professional Indoor Football League and will kick-off the league opener on Saturday March 10th when they travel to take on the Richmond Raiders.
