Despite fumbling the opening kickoff and falling behind early by seven, the East All-Stars offense managed to rally back behind a high powered rushing attack led by quarterbacks Jalen Lacy of Northside High School and Quinton Jackson of LaGrange High School. Both scored on quarterback keepers to go along with an Anton Turner (Central-Talbotton) 31-yard rushing TD the East marched to a 21-point lead mid-way into the 2nd quarter. Towards the end of the 2nd quarter, the turnovers began piling up for both teams with Jalliane Coverson (Harris County) of the East grabbing an interception along with scooping up a fumble returning it 15 yards for a touchdown. For his efforts, Coverson was awarded the Defensive Player of the Game. Behind a last second clutch 21-yard receiving touchdown from Reggie Brown (Central), the West only found themselves down by 14 heading into the half. On the opening drive of the 2nd half, the West got back within seven after fullback Jerald Walker (Central) hauled in his second touchdown reception with this one coming from nine yards out. Walker was the main focal point of the West’s offensive efforts and it proved worthy garnering him the Offensive Player of the Game award. West quarterback Cody Hughes (Central) finished Sunday’s contest passing for three touchdowns. After a fumble recovery by Deon Fortson (Central) on the ensuing drive, it appeared the West was on the verge of tying the game up. But two bad snaps leading to two safeties one by Milton Lamar (LaGrange) and James Triplett (Hardaway) finished off the East’s fourth consecutive victory over the West with a 32-21 victory. “From the outsight, our game-plan was to get the ball to our play-makers and let them do what they do best,” says East Head Coach Jamie Fox (Shaw). “We wanted to pound the ball and let our athletic ability do all the work.” For post-game interviews from Sunday’s 4th Annual East versus West High School Indoor Classic featuring Offensive MVP Jerald Walker (Central), Defensive MVP Jalliane Coverson (Harris County), and winning Head Coach Jamie Fox (Shaw) log on to www.columbuslions.net or check out Beyond the Game Sports at www.btgsports.net. |
