Lions Add Former NFL Draft Pick Dominick Sanders

05/30/2019 12:09 PM

The Columbus Lions made another splash in the free agency market, signing former Georgia Bulldog Dominick Sanders. The signing will bolster a Lions defense that already is showing its claws during the season. The 6"0, 193 pound product out of Tucker, Georgia was a 3-star recruit when he signed as part of the 2014 Georgia class.

He made an immediate impact at Georgia, getting the UGA Newcomer of the Year Award when he played and started 13 games. He continued to play at a high level, being named to Phil Steele's Preseason All-SEC Fourth Team in 2015. By his senior season, he was on the Raycom Jim Thrope Award and Senior Bowl Watch Lists while also etching his name into Georgia history when he tied the career record in interceptions with 16. He finished his career with 156 total tackles and 39 pass deflections.

Sander would go drafted in the NFL Draft. He would be picked up by the Eagles before being cut and landing with the Dallas Cowboys in 2018. But with his experience, he joins the #1 defense in the NAL. The Lions are the only team to average less than 200 yards given up during the season. The Lions secondary has hauled in eight interceptions and 28 pass break ups. Lead corner Shattle Fenteng leads the team with 12 and looks to get some backup.

New players have been in abundance as the Lions signed former Auburn Tiger Kamryn Pettway last week. It remains to be seen if Sanders will be ready to go for this Saturday. The Lions (2-3) had last week off and are getting ready for their next game this Saturday vs the Carolina Cobras (4-2) at 7PM in the Columbus Civic Center.
