The Columbus Lions escaped Carolina with a narrow 57-55 victory. Behind a great effort from Quayvon Hicks, the Lions closed the gap in the NAL standings and now only sit one game behind Cobras.
Hicks continued his dominance with 66 yards on 13 carries and three touchdowns. Hicks also tallied 20 yards receiving. The offense stayed rolling and showed why it can be the most explosive in the league. Wide receiver Jarmon Fortson led all receivers with nine catches for 86 yards and three touchdowns. Fortson displayed why he is one of the top receivers in the league and quarterback Mason Espinosa’s favorite target.
The Lions defense stepped up when it had too as well. Turnovers have been at a premium for the Lions defense, but the Lions seem to get them at key times. Defensive back Chris Pickett had a stellar game with eight tackles, 4 pass-breakups and two interceptions. The Lions secondary has shown just how disruptive they can be and they will need to continue that dominance to secure home-field advantage. The defensive line put pressure on the Cobras offense all night long, with Darius Rosser and Steve Miller each tallying a sack.
The Lions improve their record to 6-3 and have a key matchup this Saturday back at home against the Massachusetts Pirates.
