Rausa dazzles in debut, as Lions defeat Pirates

The Columbus Lions seem to have a knack for winning in the final seconds, it was a last-second touchdown pass to defeat Carolina last month and Saturday night it was new kicker Tyler Rausa who kicked the game winning field goal to give the Lions a 63-62 victory. More importantly this victory was over the Massachusetts Pirates to give the Lions sole possession of first place with a 7-3 record.
Defense and special teams were the key factors in the win for the Lions. New kicker Tyler Rausa was nothing short of amazing for the Lions. Rausa went perfect in field goal attempts and in PATs. Rausa also had 4 deuces and accounted for 21 total points. Rausa was able to not only fill the gap but exceed expectation in his debut.
“It was just fun to go out there and help the team win”, Rausa said, “I can already tell this a fun team and I am excited for the rest of the season.
Turnovers were a major part of the game for the Lions defense, highlighted by a key pick-six early in the game. The team took a bend don’t break approach and stepped up late when the Pirates tried to comeback.
While the offense did not have the day they wanted, quarterback Mason Espinosa continued his fantastic season throwing for over 200 yards and five touchdowns. Jarmon Fortson displayed why he is one of the top receivers in the league with four touchdowns and 90 yards receiving.
However, Rausa was all the talk after his game-winning kick. The Lions desperately needed their special teams to come up big and Rausa provided that in a big way for the Lions on Saturday night.
The Lions continue play this Saturday in the Jungle, taking on their rival Jacksonville Sharks. Gates open at 6pm and fans are encouraged to be early and loud in what is another crucial game for the Lions
