Lions stay undefeated at home with win over Sharks

07/09/2018 3:51 PM
Behind a tough defense and some timely offense, the Columbus Lions defeated the Jacksonville Sharks 48-43 on Saturday night. It was a sloppy game for both teams, but the Lions were able to overcome their mistakes and continue their winning ways.
To say that it was a sloppy game would be an understatement. Head coach Jason Gibson expressed his view on the game, during post-game interviews
“We didn’t play extremely well on either side of the ball,” Coach Gibson said, “We had multiple opportunities that we didn’t capitalize on and we are going to have to correct those in practice.
The Lions were held to only 212 yards of total offense. Quarterback Mason Espinosa finished 20-for-32 with 230 yards passing and four touchdowns. Once again Jarmon Fortson showed why he is one of the best in the NAL. Fortson turned in another great performance with nine catches with 67 yards and three touchdowns. Purifoy was the leading receiver for the team on Saturday night with 100 yards and a touchdown reception.
The defense continued their bend don’t break mentality. Steve Miller and Corey Crawford each accounted for a sack apiece. Robert Sands led the defense with five tackles and one tackle for loss. The defense has embraced their identity of a being an elite red-zone defense.
“We know that we have a target on our back,” defensive back Chris Pickett said, “We know we have to dig deep each week and give our team the best chance to win.”
The Lions once again found a way to win and keep their top spot in the NAL standings. They currently ride a three-game winning streak with wins over top teams in the league. They currently sit with an 8-3 record and only need to win three out the last four to claim first place and home-field advantage.

The Lions hit the road again this week, as they head to Maine to battle it out with the Mammoths. Make sure to tune in as the game will be livestreamed on YouTube.
