Columbus Lions Defeat Defending AIFA Champs To Claim Victory

by Lee Snow

The Columbus Lions proved their mettle as they defeated the reigning AIFA champions Mississippi Raiders, 63-6 in a game that rocked the Columbus Civic Center. The Raiders had not lost a game in two years, but the Lions put an end to that streak with an impressive performance.

The Lions veterans Dreandre Brown, Darrius Morris, Darren Daniels, and Kyle Griswould made their presence felt immediately, forcing a turnover on the Raiders' first possession. The perennial all-league wide receiver Jarmon Fortson was dominant on the field, scoring two touchdowns to prove why he is one of the best players in the game.

Quarterback Marcus Brooks once again led the charge on offense, throwing for seven touchdowns and connecting with Fortson, Ramond Deloatch, Alex Coleman, Andre Thurmond, and Desmond Reece. Running backs John Holloway and Dorell Green also had rushing in the game with Green making a dazzling run as 3 defenders missed him on his way to end zone.

Mississippi got their lone touchdown early on in the game with a 38-yard pass from QB Aldon Clark to Receiver Tyreick Jorell, which made the game 7-6. However, the Lions took over the game from that point forward, scoring the next eight touchdowns with their electrifying offense and lights-out defense.

The Lions proved that they are the new kings of the mountain, and the old guard was in full effect in their win over the Raiders. The Lions will return to the Den next week on June 2nd to take on the Capital City Cyclones from Tallahassee, Florida.
