Lions Re-Sign Defensive Back/Wide Receiver Droell Greene

by Alex Husting

Droell Greene will be back at the Columbus Civic Center for the 2022 NAL season with the Lions re-signing the defensive back and wide receiver this week. Greene appeared in six games for the Lions during the 2021 season, racking up 18 total tackles, the fifth-most on the defense, one interception and three pass breakups.

Greene was part of the dominant Lions defense from a year ago that was Top-2 in every major category, including a league-leading 31 takeaways, ten more than second place.

As Greene returns to Columbus for the 2022 season, his role with the Lions will be a little different. This offseason the NAL announced the establishment of Ironman football for the 2022 season.

In Ironman football, all players will play both sides of the ball which means players like Greene will be featured in the Lions offense as well in the 2022 season. The NAL Ironman rules do allow for teams to designate two offensive and defensive specialists and one for special teams as well. The Lions have not designated Greene as a defensive specialist so he will be a two-way player.

While the effects of the new rules on the players of the NAL remains to be seen, head coach Jason Gibson is confident in Greene's ability to adjust.

"I have huge expectations for him this season on both sides of the ball," Gibson said.

The NAL released an official set of rules earlier this month and that article can be found here.
